A new Fortnite island and Discord community foster emotional resilience and democratic imagination in a safe digital space
The MORES project is entering the metaverse. In collaboration with MORES teams across Europe, the consortium today debuts Metamores—a Fortnite-based island and Discord community designed to explore how people engage with politics and emotions in virtual environments.
Metamores offers a four-week open adventure where participants aged 18 and older explore political roleplay, collective storytelling, and democratic decision-making. The experience is part of a scientific effort to understand how digital spaces and emotions shape the way we think about politics—and how immersive technologies reimagine civic participation.
MORES guarantees the privacy of participants: the project follows the terms and conditions of Fortnite and Discord. No personal data will be collected for commercial purposes, and chat discussions will be anonymised and used exclusively for scientific analysis. Project researchers will moderate Metamores and users need to read and consent to the platforms’ policies before joining the experience. Onboarding guidelines are available on the Discord community (see below).
Once inside, players will take part in fun activities and define together the future of the digital island. That includes discussing different topics, making political choices about the island, and handling dramatic events about it. Your choices will shape the course of the game—and provide insights into how values and emotions influence political imagination.
“Metamores is a game, but it provides us with a chance to experiment collective meaning-making,” says Olivier Mauco, MORES researcher and director at Game in Society, which led the development of Metamores. The game was co-developed with MORES teams in Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences (Hungary), Eötvös Lorand University (Hungary), European University Viadrina (Germany), Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), and University of Lorraine (France).
“Our goal is to design playful but rigorous environments where everyone can express political feelings, take action, collaborate, and discover what democracy could look like in the metaverse,” Mauco explains.
Whether you’re into politics, emotional roleplay, or simply curious to explore how metaverses can become a digital agora—Metamores is now open.
